Archives and Cultural Heritage in the Digital Age

On 20 October 2017, our Center have organized a conference titled “Archives and Cultural Heritage in the Digital Age” in Albert Long Hall (South Campus) at Boğaziçi University.The conference, bringing together participants from different disciplines and fields of specializations, opened to discussion the latest developments in Turkey in the areas of archival work and digitization.

The questions addressed by the participants included: “What is the historical trajectory of traditional archival work in Turkey and how do the new information technologies alter this tradition?”, “What are the advantages and limitations of legal regulations pertaining to the archives and archival work?”, “What are the roles and significance of archive experts, librarians, academics and curators working in and on the archives in the creation and transformation of institutional and social memory?”, “What kind of paths should be followed in establishing the technical criteria in archival work and digitization?”, “How does the new information technologies and systems used in archival work and digitization contribute to academic research?”.

The conference started with the opening addresses of Prof. Dr. Mehmed Özkan, the Rector of Boğaziçi University; Özgül Özkan Yavuz, the Secretary General of İstanbul Development Agency and Prof. Dr. Cengiz Kırlı, the Coordinator of Boğaziçi University Archives and Documentation Center. The conference, which started at 9:30 AM, included four sessions with the following titles: “Archives Tradition in Turkey and Legal Discussions”, “Digitization, New Information Technologies and Contributions to Academic Research”, “Organizing, Visualizing and Accessing Archives”, “Cataloguing, Digitization and Conservation in Private Collection”.
